Under the Sea

Also known as the Hawaiian Triggerfish (much easier to say), the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a is the unofficial state fish of Hawaii. There are various translations of the word humuhumunukunukuapua'a including "fish with a snout like a pig." Another rumored reason for the name is that when it is caught and brought out of the water, it snorts like a pig. One of its defensive characteristics is its ability to puff up somewhat, wedging itself between rocks or in coral. When it is brought to the surface, this air is released, making the snorting noise. The word "pua'a" in Hawaiian means "pig." According to this version, the name, humuhumunukunukuapua'a literally means "fish who comes out of the water and sounds like a pig."

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a info found here.

you did a beautiful job on the fish and the colours! it made me a little sad when you said the fish snorts like a pig it just seems like such a vulnerable sound and my dog rat snorts like a pig all the time and it is such a sweet sound! It would be very hard for me to eat a fish that sounds like a pig!

That's one fancy fish. I like the background patterning and even though it's clearly done by you, it has a different feel from your other work. It's lovely. Will it join the wall of fame?

Wow! This is brilliant in every way! The areas of black bring all the other colors out in dazzling contrast...the water looks deliciously tropical. I love this painting, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the stroy about its name:>

Btw, you forgot to put lips on your fish. Doesn't every fish have lips? ;)

I agree with Andrea, this has a somewhat different feel than your other pieces, even though it is obviously yours. I love the boldness of the fish and the background is beautiful!

I really love your bright washy style and it really suits this great fish.

Thanks too for the fascinating story about the hummunnhanannanablahblah fish, learn something new everyday. In fact, I so admire it's ability to puff up and wedge itself in spots to avoid being reeled in, I might try and adopt that skill myself...

Time to make dinner? FFFFP "Would love to but I seem to be wedged in the couch"

Time to go to work? FFFFFFFP "Would love to but I can't seem to fit through the door"

Then I'd snort away to myself in a happy-evil-plan-accomplished fashion!
